Samsung’s Ring gets competition with $599 Ultrahuman Ring Air

There’s more than one smart ring in town, as a new player arrives offering tracking for sleep and sun, alongside all the other fitness tech and no subscription.

The world of smart devices has been getting ever smaller, and last year sae one of the tiniest takes on the tech in recent years: a ring.

Samsung’s Galaxy Ring delivered much of what can be found in its smartwatch but without the screen, handy for folks who prefer to keep their wrists clean and go without a watch.

But there was a catch, or at least one, anyway: you needed an Android phone if you wanted to try the ring technology, and more specifically, a Samsung to get the most out of it. iPhone owners need not apply for that Droid exclusive.

While Apple has yet to dive into smart rings, an alternative has emerged with a more platform agnostic approach to compact wearables.

Relative newbie Ultrahuman has launched its take on the smart ring in Australia with the Ring Air, a 2.4 gram smart ring sporting a thickness of 2.45mm and sensors to track a variety of health aspects, including heart rate, temperature, and movement, thanks to a six-axis motion sensor.

The technology will support all the typical health features — heart rate tracking and sleep tracking — as well as vitamin D monitoring for exposure to the sun, sleep patterns, screen time, as well as features for cycle, ovulation, and pregnancy. It will also reportedly come with up to six days of battery life, with a full recharge taking three hours.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect is that the Ultrahuman Ring Air will support iOS and Android out of the box, making it iPhone friendly for folks curious about it.

Initially, JB HiFi, Officeworks, and The Good Guys will get the ring first, arriving in May for $599.95, with size options for different finger sizes, as well as a range of finishes and colours.
