LG marries lighting and gardening with indoor greens

If you wished your lamps could do something more functional than simply provide light, LG has an idea on that could make homes more interesting.

CES is home to some of the more exciting TV and camera announcements of the year, but it can also be home to some of the crazier ideas. And before the show actually kicks off this year, LG is showing one of those crazy ideas already.

The idea will see a lamp and lampshade act as a form of a garden, with a section underneath the lampshade used for growing herbs and flowers.

The round platform will support as many as twenty small plants and disperses water automatically, with LG’s ThinQ app being used to control schedules and lighting, while also being used to monitor plant growth over time. Support for as much as 5 litres of water will be found in the unit, ensuring the plants are watered for you.

That’s the case in the floor-standing lamp model, while a more compact table lamp model will provide a similar concept, though likely without the large tank of water.

There’s no word on pricing yet or even Australian availability, but here’s hoping we do see it. The idea could just making living rooms that much more interesting, and when powered with solar electricity, a little more renewable, as well.
