It’s not just Samsung with a screen-equipped fridge, as Hisense dabbles in the idea, complete with AI suggestions on what to make.
If you’ve ever wanted to know what to do with the items in your fridge — specifically what to cook — a new fridge and app combination on the way from Hisense could just make that a little easier.
One of the many, many announcement from CES 2025 this year, Hisense is getting into the small world of smart fridges, big refrigerators that tend to bring double doors and big screens, complete with access to the web for looking up recipes on what you can use what’s inside your fridge for.
In recent years, the concept of the smart fridge has grown beyond the mere “internet fridge”, which was basically just a screen mounted to a fridge to act as a whiteboard or noticeboard of sorts. They can still do that, but the technology has improved, and manufacturers are making them do more.
Samsung’s smart fridge offers a camera to track what goes in the fridge, as well as some AI goodness for energy usage, so what is Hisense bringing to the table for its first version?
Meal planner and dish designing, it seems, with AI capabilities connecting to an app to help you work out what to cook.
“Redefining the kitchen experience with smart, connected and sustainable appliances, Hisense is committed to setting new industry standards and enhancing the way Australians live,” said Chris Kotis, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Hisense in Australia.
The Hisense Smart Hub fridge will also come with an adaptable storage zone, allowing you to change a part of the fridge to be either a fridge or a freezer, with ranges from -20ºC to +5ºC, while that same app for recipes will let you set reminders for expiry dates and even track what has gone into your fridge.
It doesn’t sound like the camera-based approach Samsung uses is here, but that could also end up cutting back on the cost for when it does eventually launch locally, which will be later this year.
