Australians get another streaming service as Max arrives March 31

Foxtel and Binge may not be the only place where HBO’s shows and films are found shortly, as Max looks set to launch locally very soon.

Streaming may well be rising in price, but don’t let that stop service providers from giving you yet another to add to your pile to pay for.

While it seems that every video streaming service is going up in price — and seemingly everything in your life with it — Australians keen on watching the programming offered by the likes of HBO, Warner Bros, Discovery, and the Cartoon Network, to name a few, will shortly be found on another streaming service.

Officially, Max is coming to Australia, launched in collaboration between Foxtel and Warner Bros. Discovery to provide HBO’s and Max’s programming to yet another outlet.

If it sounds a little like Foxtel or Binge under another name, but it’s not quite that, because following the launch, new runs of HBO programming will disappear from Binge. That means shows such as The White Lotus and Last Week Tonight which are currently running should keep doing so on Binge until their season ends. However, new seasons, such as the upcoming seasons of The Last of Us will not appear on Binge, switching over to Max instead.

That doesn’t mean the launch of Max locally means Foxtel won’t get Max programming, either. Foxtel notes that its million subscribers will get Max’s extra content with their existing subscription, provided they have an iQ3, iQ4, or iQ5 box, and are happy with the “basic plan with ads”. Likewise, the Max app will come to the Hubbl, which hopefully has gotten better since we reviewed it at launch.

However, it does mean that if you actively tune into HBO programming to Binge, which is just some of what the service offers, you’ll need to get your fill from another app and service very shortly.
