Apple’s slate of TV programming may well be focused on Apple’s devices, but if you own an Android, you can now find Apple TV+ there, too.
Even though there are clear differences between iPhones and Android phones, the platforms don’t typically share features. Apple’s recent and clever Passwords app is iPhone only, meaning Android owners can’t partake, and the same is true with other Apple apps, such as the App Store, Apple Watch, Apple Wallet, and more.
But a rare one or two do exist on Android, allowing people to jump platforms and keep using those services.
For instance, if you have a single or family subscription to Apple Music, you can use either the iPhone app or Apple Music made for Android, with support in both places.
There aren’t many Android Apple apps, but they do exist, and one more has just launched, expanding Apple’s reach.
Apple TV+ has arrived on the Google App Store, adding to the rare cross-platform app options Apple makes, and providing more ways for people to tune into some of the service’s great programming. That includes the fun of Severance, as well as plenty of other great programming options, and even Apple’s foray into live sports, an area Disney+ will be joining soon, as well.
The app launch on Android essentially expands who can watch Apple TV+ and where, with device support going back to Android 10 several years ago, and working across phone, foldable, and tablet.
If you have an iCloud account, you can just log in on the Android app, and if you don’t have one, you can also create it there, too. Interestingly, you can even pay for an Apple TV+ subscription using the Google billing system, something we don’t think Australian Apple subscribers have seen prior.
However, there’s one thing the Apple TV+ app for Android won’t do compared to the Google TV and Apple equivalents: you can’t browse previously purchased iTunes TV shows and movies. While that is definitely a feature on Google TV, and of course on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and an Apple TV, it’s not part of the Apple TV+ experience on Android just yet.
One thing at a time, it seems, with Apple TV+ programming going live first, launching this week in Australia and the rest of the world.
