Ultimate Ears shrinks its Roll to a smaller MiniRoll

Taking your music to go doesn’t necessarily need much more than a few grams, as UE rolls out something smaller.

Portable speakers can take on all sorts of shapes and sizes, but there are some that are easy to associate with the category.

Cylinders of sound are the norm, something Ultimate Ears practically invented, and like other speakers, there are also boxes of sound, as well. There are shapes that sit in between both — softened rectangular boxes or the pill-shaped option Beats goes with — and then there are the other more unusual shapes.

Ultimate Ears has long offered one of those unusual shapes in the “Roll”, a speaker that didn’t technically roll away, even if it did roll in its spot. Very much like a squished ball, the UE Roll didn’t look like many speakers out there.

The latest play on that comes in the form of the “MiniRoll”, a take on that squished ball that looks as though someone has sat on it, but designed to be smaller.

The UE MiniRoll is remsincent of its sibling which hasn’t been updated in quite some time. The latest take is relatively light, offering a Bluetooth speaker in a 279 gram package, an IP67 water resistance rating, and up to 12 hours of battery on a single charge. There’s even a little flat strap on the back, so you can attach the speaker to a bag or something else.

“We heard our fans loud and clear: they wanted a speaker that could strap in and go anywhere to keep up with their active lifestyles,” said Jonah Staw, General Manager of Ultimate Ears.

“This led our design and engineering teams to build our most portable speaker, showing how passionate consumers can drive innovation,” he said.

While small may well be the aim of this speaker, it also seems to extend to the price, with the MiniRoll priced at $99.95 in Australia with availability expected in October.
