Panasonic shrinks the shaver to palm size

Miniaturisation is often one of the better ways technology evolves, and the latest shaver from Panasonic is all about that.

Whenever a new gadget comes out, there’s the question of “what exactly is new about it”. Are there new features? Does the battery last longer? Will it make my life slightly better?

Sometimes, those new features have to do with miniaturisation and getting the size down. Size is an important factor for devices, and while there’s no “one size fits all” solution for technology, the smaller you can make something, often the better it is. Smaller chips can lead to bigger batteries and better power optimisation in phones and laptops, and so on and so on.

The same can actually be said of personal appliances, as well. You only have so much space in life for these gadgets, so making them compact can be important.

With a new take on the shaver from Panasonic, that is exactly what the company has built.

Called the CM3, it’s a compact shaver years in the making, with Panasonic turning to Australians for feedback to build something smaller and more amenable with modern charging standards, namely USB-C.

“We’re excited to utilise USB-C charging capabilities in this new compact shaver range to help simplify the charging process whether at the gym, on the move or overseas,” said Richard Tassone, Director of the Consumer Group at Panasonic Australia.

The addition means random charging plugs solely for a shaver have been switched out, replaced with the same charge port you can use for your phone, tablet, laptop, and likely headphones.

Travel with the CM3 and you can charge it easily with the same cable as the rest of your carry, and since some electric toothbrushes use USB-C, as well, it could very well cover it all.

Outside of the USB-C, the CM3 includes three blades made from stainless steel, a linear motor, a touch controller to turn the shaver on and off, and a sensor to pick up on different stages of beard growth. Able to pick up beard hair 216 times per second, the portable shaver can boost power when a beard is heavier, or taper it back when the stubble is lighter.

One thing you won’t find in the range is a beard trimmer.

The CM3 is a shaver, though one that can work dry or wet, in the shower, with gel, or simply in front of the mirror without water. But it won’t really handle grooming of beards and is a shaver. Folks with beards may want to look elsewhere, or trim parts of their beard carefully using this shaver.

Panasonic Australia didn’t rule out whether a beard trimming version of the CM3 was on the way, however, noting that it’s a part of the company’s ethos.

“The ‘mini and mighty’ ethos of convenience without compromising on performance is an exciting step in Personal Care and Panasonic will continue to lead the charge and introduce new products which deliver consistent value, style and performance for our customers,” said Tassone.

You’ll find the Panasonic CM3 in stores shortly, priced at $299 in Australia.
