Oppo’s A80 brings 5G, AI to under $400

A big battery, a fast screen, 5G, and support for AI are just some of the reasons Oppo wants you to consider its mid-range A80.

Flagship phones might have launched recently from Samsung’s Fold and Google’s Pixel ranges, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is interested in the high-end. Some might be more focused on the low, or even the mid-range, particularly given how much you can save to get something similar, even if it’s not the same.

The most expensive phones tend to come with the premium technology, but over time, that trickles down, and this year, some of that approach means the potential to bag some solid deals.

In a new phone from Oppo, we could be seeing some of that very shortly.

The company’s latest A-series model looks to snag folks looking for big and fast screens, plenty of battery power, and even a dose of AI, as it brings all of that and a little more to the A80.

“This year, Oppo will equip more than 50 million users’ phones with generative AI technology globally,” said Michael Tran, Managing Director of Oppo Australia.

“Accelerating the adoption of AI phones, we are introducing generative AI technology to the A series for the first time. We are excited to bring this innovative AI technology to Australian users through our new A80 handset, making advanced technology accessible.”

The addition will see AI come to the phone with an AI image editor called “AI Eraser” to edit unwanted people or objects out of photos, much like you can with a Pixel phone.

Oppo will also include a proprietary “AI Linkboost” feature to improve connection quality even when the mobile or WiFi signal is weak, or even busy. That’s the idea, anyway.

Alongside the AI features, the A80 will come with a 120Hz 6.67 inch screen maxed at 720p, making it big and fast, but with a less than Full HD resolution.

Meanwhile the cameras on the back include a 50 megapixel F1.85 main camera and a 2 megapixel portrait camera for the softened background images. That setup offers technically one camera for you to use, but there’s also an 8 megapixel camera up front for selfies.

Inside, the Oppo A80 will use a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 with support for 5G, matching it to 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, and Android 14 with Oppo’s ColorOS 14 over the top.

There’s also a sizeable 5100mAh battery packing in an extra 100mAh on top of the regular 5K batteries we’ve seen in phones of late. You can even charge it up with a fast 45W flash charge if you use the charger in the box, which boasts Oppo’s SuperVooc for speedy recharge times.

It’ll all come in a body measuring 7.68mm thick and encased in something Oppo calls “360º Damage-Resistant Armour”, which is to say the screen uses reinforced glass while the inside reportedly has improved cushioning material for drops.

Oppo even says the phone has passed MIL-STD-810H for shock resistance, and can be matched with an anti-drop shield case as a standard, giving you that little bit extra resistance on the day to day.

The price does keep things friendly, though, with Oppo noting the A80 will arrive in Australia for $369. You can expect to find this shortly, retailing at the typical assortment of Big W, The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, JB HiFi, Officeworks, and also Oppo’s online store in both purple and black.

UPDATE: The original version of this story noted that the durable case arrived with the phone. Oppo has corrected that to saying that it’s an optional extra, so we’ve updated the story accordingly.
