New toothbrush maker Oclean brings AI to the mouth

Can AI deliver a better dental experience? Australians could well find out, as a new electric toothbrush maker joins the market with AI on-board.

It really is the year of AI, as the year’s most obvious trend makes its way to more gadgets. Artificial intelligence in your phone, in the aptly named AI PC, in cars and ovens and so much more, and shortly in your mouth with an AI toothbrush. No, we’re not kidding.

Australians keen to see what life is like with an AI-enhanced toothbrush could well find out shortly, as one arrives in the Oclean X Ultra S Smart Sonic electric toothbrush.

A real mouthful of a name for a product made to fit in and fix your mouth, Oclean’s gadget is an electric toothbrush with support for an app on your phone, joining only a handful of WiFi-connected toothbrushes including one from Oral-B.

Oclean aims to be different thanks to a motor able to run at 42,000 RPM for up to 84,000 movements per minute, all while remaining relatively quiet.

There’s a chip that works to understand brushing habits, tracking your brush movements and using bone conduction technology to understand pressure and position, relaying this information to an AI toothbrush tell you where to brush, while also sending the information to iPhone owners via Apple Health.

The toothbrush even includes a small screen, informing you of where the brush needs to go in your mouth, while your app builds a personalised brushing report and a score for your oral health.

“Oclean products have been successful in many countries around the world due to their unique technology, so there was a huge demand for the range from our Australian partners and consumers alike,” said Chris Wang, Managing Director for Oclean in the Asia Pacific region.

The X Ultra S toothbrush is definitely geared at the high end for toothbrushes, though: priced at $449 in Australia, it is not an inexpensive oral hygiene gadget by any stretch of the imagination. It does come with a case completely with a USB-C charger built in, as well as three replaceable toothbrush heads, but nearing $500 is not exactly cheap for a toothbrush.

However, Oclean’s X Ultra S may not be any other toothbrush. Offering five preset modes but customised cleaning, an AI voice guide, and a way to include dental information to your health metrics, it could be one of the more interesting AI gadgets we’ve heard about all year.

Australians can expect to find the Oclean X Ultra S AI toothbrush from Shaver Shop specifically, priced at $449.95, while replacement toothbrush heads are available from $30 for a 2-pack.
