The AirTag is just for Apple owners and the Samsung equivalent just for Samsung owners. And yet Motorola’s Tag is for all Android phones.
It’s been a few years since Apple introduced the AirTag, and while there have been tweaks and changes, Android users have largely been left to their own devices. Almost literally.
Simply put, while the AirTag is the tracker of choice for folks in the iPhone world looking to keep tabs on luggage and other things, pets included, there aren’t a heap of trackers for Android devices. There’s the Tile ecosystem, which is good for all, and if you have a Samsung phone, you can use the Samsung SmartTag 2 platform.
But if you have any other Android phone, it has seemed like your choices were limited. They existed, but finding them wasn’t always easy.
Fortunately that looks set to change, with Motorola launching a tracker made for all Android phones, provided they run Android 9 and above, and have Bluetooth Low Energy onboard. That should be any mid-range and higher Android phone sold within the past few years, meaning there are quite a few phones that will see compatibility.
Motorola’s tracker is simply named the “Moto Tag”, and it even sports a similar look to the Apple equivalent, complete with a replaceable battery compartment out the back, arriving in an IP67 water resistant design.
The tracker itself relies on Bluetooth LE and Google’s Find My Device to provide location data, effectively relying on Android devices to crowdsource the location of your tracked gadgets. The data sits in the background, but much like how iPhones are looking for AirTags in the background, so too are Androids pinpointing tracked tags in the background, and this is no different for the Moto Tag.
The price is about the same as other tag models, that said, with Motorola offering the Tag for $55 for a single Moto Tag, or $179 for a pack of four. The range of trackers is available now, found at Harvey Norman stores across the country in blue and green.
