Intel readies graphics chips for AI, gaming in cars

Waiting in the car is about to get a whole lot more interesting than simply listening to the radio, as Intel readies car-based GPUs.

Cars are getting more complex, and not just because of the electric components needed to make an EV that much more fuel efficient. It seems that chip-maker Intel is getting in on the action with a graphics chip coming to modern car cockpits.

It’s official: the car dashboard is going to lean on modern computer technology in a much bigger way. While it’s true that every car these days has an onboard computer, Intel’s plans to offer a dedicated graphics chip could change just what that onboard computer can do, as the company leverages its tech for graphics, AI, and more.

The news will see the Intel Arc graphics chips used alongside another system-on-a-chip, with the combination seemingly powering in-car user interfaces while also leveraging the technology to handle several in-vehicle cameras, reportedly able to monitor up to six at a time. Artificial intelligence can also be used with the chip, processing language and answering car-related questions, and that’ not all.

Intel notes that the car-based graphics chip can also handle gaming titles from inside the car, potentially opening up the entertainment capabilities while you’re parked, or even offering the kids some gaming while you drive.

There’s no word as to which cars Intel’s technology will land in just yet, but the chip-maker suggests the Intel Arc graphics for Automotive should be found in cars as early as next year.
