Husqvarna builds a robo mower for lawn and edges

A new generation of Husqvarna’s robotic mower sees GPS and object avoidance help mow the main lawn, while an extra cutting disc deals with the edges and trim.

If you’ve already subscribed to the idea of a robot-led future, it could mean doing less work and letting technology take over. That’s certainly the case with robotic vacuums, which are steadily getting better, as well as robotic window cleaners.

Depending on where you live and the backyard you have, robotic mowers could be the next logical path. They’re typically pricey, but they could just grant you back some time on the weekends, dealing with the backyard so you don’t have to.

Instead of getting out an electric mower giving you the job of manual labour, Husqvarna’a latest gadget aims to cover the green of a backyard in more ways than one. Rather than simply dealing with the main lawn, the latest generation includes an extra cutter able to trim the edges of the lawn, giving you one less task to do.

Called the Huaqvarna Automower 410XE, the robo-mower marries GPS and sensors to create a virtual map as the mower works, dealing with up to 1000 square metres of land, while an object avoidance system allows the mower to avoid running into things. When those “things” are moved, the mower will come back later to trim the lawn, retaining the height the mower was previously set to.

While the mowing the main part of the lawn is clearly important, one of the main features that makes this mower stand out is the edge trimming, a feature Husqvarna calls “EdgeCut”.

The idea is simply enough: use an extra cutting system to trim the edges down to 1cm, giving you neater grass without having to reach for the manual labour of an actual lawn trimmer.

“With the game-changing EdgeCut technology, garden owners can reclaim their time, as this innovative feature drastically reduces the need for manual edge trimming,” said Sarah Jenkinson, Brand Manager for Husqvarna.

The price could give you pause, however; the cost for reclaiming your time sees the Automower 410XE priced at $3699 in Australia. If you have that spare, you’ll find the Automower in stores across the country, with your weekend time potentially granted back alongside it.
