Dyson has already changed hair care with science, but its next take on the category involves your phone and your preferences.
Technology is typically personal and not the sort of thing you’re likely to hand over, simply because they’re yours.
Your phone is personal; don’t give it to anyone else. Your earphones are for your ears; don’t let other people put them in their ears. And they’re not the only gadgets. No one really wants someone else to type on their laptop keyboard, or to speak (and spit) on their microphone, because all of these things are yours.
The latest Dyson gadget might just sit in this world, too, as the company’s latest hair care tech becomes personal to how you want to style it.
While a Dyson fan or vacuum can be easily shared with anyone, the same may not be true of the Dyson Airwrap “i.d.”, an evolution of the Airwrap wand that uses hot air and the Coanda effect to curl hair almost effortlessly.
The latest variation is very much like its predecessor, but with Bluetooth built-in. Instead of just simply being a compact heating fan and curling wand of sorts, the Airwrap Id includes Bluetooth to talk to the Dyson app, allowing you to personalise the time hair type, hair length, heating amount, and skill level used with the Airwrap to create curls for the user’s hair type.
In short, it’s still a device you’ll want to keep all to yourself, and the Dyson app might just reinforce this, with pre-programmed settings inside the app to match the curls you’re trying to achieve.
Helping this is a total of 19 attachment for various styling, all arriving in a case to keep it all together, with the Airwrap i.d. relying on your phone to get your hair styled thanks to an assortment of presets you’re making ahead of time.
“The app guides users through each step, based on the user’s profile to make curling easier,” said Low Chen Nyeow, Associate Design Manager for Dyson Beauty. “Adjustable temperature settings change the high and low heat temperatures for thermal comfort, based on their personal preference and maintenance notifications reminders guide them to clean their filter.”
Essentially, you’ll be using the Dyson app to change how you want to style your hair, and letting the Airwrap work out the right time to be held with each set of strands.
One thing Dyson hasn’t announced is the price for Australia, with the Airwrap Id expected later this year all the same. Given the current Airwrap sits at $849 locally, we imagine the Id model might max out around the $1K mark, though it could be more. We’ll know later this year with the model expected to arrive within the next few months.
