Not everything at Mobile World Congress you can touch and feel, or at least know you’ll be able to by the end of March. Some things will take a little longer.
You’re going to see quite a few mobiles out this week, and that’s because Mobile World Congress is on in Spain, the event that is basically like the CES of the mobile world.
It’s on every year at the end of February, and this year you can expect to see both 5G and foldable phones make an appearance, though some of these may not be in devices that will arrive on shelves as fast as others.
In fact, some of the news coming out of Mobile World Congress is just that — news — and that includes what Oppo is showing off, revealing that 10x zoom camera it talked about earlier in the year, while also talking about 5G phones it plans to launch with Telstra and Optus in 2019.
The developments include that 10x zoom technology, which Oppo says is made of three cameras working together. There’s a standard lens, a telephoto lens, and an ultra-wide lens, similar to what’s in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, though the configuration is such that you can get much, much closer, paired with optical image stabilisation to control the hand-shake when you do get close to the picture.
“As a brand, Oppo is driven by customer insight and developing new technologies to meet their everyday needs,” said Michael Tran, Managing Director of Oppo in Australia.
“We have been investing heavily in innovation with a huge commitment to R&D in areas such as image beautification technology, 5G, AI, AR and VR,” he said.
“With 10x lossless zoom, our mission was to develop a camera technology that would bring customers closer and let them capture content in a way that no other smartphone manufacturer has to date. We believe we’ve achieved that.”
Oppo will also be getting into 5G, joining Samsung’s S10 5G that was previously announced last week.
While there’s no date as to when this is coming aside for later in the year, Oppo has confirmed it wil be working with both Optus and Telstra, and will include the Snapdragon 855 in at least one of its phones.
“Oppo has been anticipating and preparing for the arrival of 5G since 2015 and has invested in design and technology to ensure the production of a desirable smartphone, that doesn’t compromise on functionality to accommodate 5G features and benefits,” said Tran.
There’s no news on a specific phone, as such, and no word on whether we’ll see a new R-series phone this year, or whether it will pop up in a new model “Find”, but we’ll let you know when that changes.
